Role Summary

Champion the highest standard of evidence-based care for families as the Lead Lactation Consultant within an award-winning Mother-Baby (Postpartum) unit. Operating under the general direction of the Nurse Manager, this leadership role blends direct clinical practice with strategic program oversight. You will evaluate the lactation needs of the mother-baby dyad across both inpatient and outpatient settings, design custom care plans, and lead prenatal community education classes. As a clinical anchor, you will drive key quality initiatives—including the maintenance of the prestigious Baby-Friendly Designation—and oversee crucial specialized operations like the Human Donor Milk and breast pump rental programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Excellence: Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate complex lactation interventions for the mother-baby dyad; provide direct nursing care as an RN when clinically required.

  • Educational Leadership: Design, implement, and evaluate lactation orientation and ongoing in-service training programs for nursing and physician staff to ensure clinical competency.

  • Community Outreach: Facilitate prenatal education classes and manage outpatient lactation resources to support families post-discharge.

  • Baby-Friendly Alignment: Lead data collection, staff auditing, and compliance tracking to sustain the hospital's Baby-Friendly Initiative designation.

  • Specialized Program Management: Oversee the operational workflows, documentation, and safety of the Human Donor Milk program and the facility’s pump rental program.

  • Consultative Resource: Serve as the subject matter expert on complex lactation issues for hospital staff, physicians, and patients across the organization.

  • Quality & Compliance: Lead departmental Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives and maintain strict adherence to infection control, safety, and hospital care standards.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

  • Licensure: Current New York State Registered Nurse License/Registration.

  • Specialty Certification: Active certification as an IBCLC (International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant) from the IBLCE.

  • Life Support Certifications: Current BLS, NRP, and ACLS (American Heart Association) are all required.

  • Acuity Insight: Comprehensive knowledge of current nursing, lactation, medical, and health trends affecting postpartum and neonatal populations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Leadership History: Prior experience leading clinical committees, driving quality benchmarks (like Baby-Friendly standards), or managing specialized clinical programs.

  • Communication Mastery: Exceptional interpersonal skills tailored for cross-departmental collaboration, physician engagement, and public classroom instruction.

  • Professional Accountability: Active engagement with CERP requirements to maintain advanced credentials.

  • Work Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire (Permanent)

  • Schedule: 10-Hour Shifts | 4 Days per Week.

    • Shift Times: Variable rotation between 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM and 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Flexibility with both shifts is required).
