Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to an adult inmate population within a correctional healthcare setting. The RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care while ensuring the delivery of safe, evidence-based nursing services. This role requires strong clinical judgment, emergency response capabilities, and the ability to work collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, correctional staff, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to promote the health and well-being of incarcerated individuals.
Essential Responsibilities

Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized plans of care.

Provide direct patient care for acute, chronic, and urgent medical conditions.

Administer medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions in accordance with physician orders and nursing standards.

Respond promptly to medical emergencies throughout the facility, providing assessment, stabilization, and life-saving interventions as needed.

Conduct patient triage and prioritize care based on clinical urgency.

Monitor and evaluate patient progress, documenting all assessments, treatments, and responses accurately in the electronic medical record.

Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and communicate changes in patient condition.

Provide nursing care to patients housed in general population, restrictive housing, and infirmary or observation units, as assigned.

Perform wound care, medication management, chronic disease monitoring, and post-procedure or post-operative care.

Educate patients regarding medications, disease processes, treatment plans, and health promotion.

Ensure compliance with infection control standards, correctional healthcare policies, and all state and federal regulations.

Maintain patient confidentiality while adhering to correctional facility security procedures.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives and perform other nursing duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Previous correctional, emergency, medical-surgical, critical care, or long-term care nursing experience preferred.

Strong assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills.

Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational abilities.

Ability to work independently while maintaining effective collaboration with the healthcare and correctional teams.
Work Environment
This position is located within a secure correctional facility and requires the ability to provide professional nursing care in a structured, fast-paced environment. The RN must be comfortable managing a diverse patient population, responding to emergencies, and balancing security requirements with high-quality, compassionate patient care.
