Job Title: Application Performance and Architecture OPT
Job ID: 81752
Location: Burnaby, British Columbia

What you will be doing:

  • Analyze the current SQL Server schema, indexes, queries, and stored procedures for inefficiencies.

  • Review and profile the application-to-database interactions, particularly areas of high latency or excessive query load.

  • Collaborate with developers to audit data access layers (e.g., ORM, custom queries).

  • Identify Oracle-to-SQL Server patterns that are sub-optimal and recommend schema or logic adjustments.

  • Evaluate and improve the performance of batch jobs, reporting queries, and user-facing screens.

  • Recommend and implement best practices in indexing, data types, partitioning, and caching.

  • Assess current infrastructure configuration (e.g., memory, IOPS, storage layout) to determine if environment contributes to performance problems.

  • Document findings, create an optimization roadmap, and train internal teams where needed.

What you must have:

  • Proven expertise in SQL Server performance tuning, indexing, and query optimization.

  • Strong understanding of Oracle RDBMS concepts and migration or co-existence strategies.

  • Experience working with enterprise-grade legacy applications (monoliths, layered architectures).

  • Deep knowledge of T-SQL, execution plans, and SQL Server internals (locking, deadlocks, statistics).

  • Ability to interpret application code (C#, Java, or equivalent) and correlate with DB access patterns.

  • Experience with performance profiling tools: SQL Profiler, Query Store, Extended Events, etc.

  • Solid grasp of data architecture and data modeling best practices.

  • Ability to communicate technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with ORMs (e.g., Entity Framework, Hibernate) and their impact on performance.

  • Experience in database design modernization (e.g., introducing caching layers, denormalization strategies).

  • Exposure to hybrid cloud/on-premise database architectures.

  • Knowledge of DevOps or CI/CD processes in relation to schema deployment.
