Overview:
The Structural Engineer is responsible to participate and supervise the concept, basic, functional design engineering packages and to maintain close contact with clients, sub-contractors, suppliers and class societies during Build as well. Engage with sub contracted Engineering firm when performing work for the company and manage their work, review and accept documentations. The projects range from complete new builds science vessels to navy non-combat vessels.

 

What you will be doing:
Inputs to Technical Department cross function areas:

  • Provides input and advice on issues related to the Structural aspects of the design and build of the ships.

  • Provide technical advice for any issue related to Structural Design, construction.

  • Knowledge in Ship Design and production concepts.

  • General Engineering expertise: Ship Structural Design, able to provide technical advice for any other structural issue that could appear in the shipyard

  • Knowledge in ship design in other disciplines such as: Naval Architecture, Outfitting & Safety, Machinery & Piping, Electrical.

  • Primary Structure. Knowledge and experience of: Ship Hull Structural Design and Calculations,  ship scantling software such as LR RulesCalc, GL Poseidon, BV Mars, etc.

  • Secondary Structure. Knowledge and experience of: Secondary Structure, Foundation Design as applicable in ships, considering statics and dynamic forces, Lifting and Turning (awareness should be an asset), Docking and Undocking (awareness should be an asset).

  • 2D Beam Structural Analysis and Finite Element Analysis. Knowledge and experience in: FEA concept for Structural (Local and Global strength analysis), software such as Poseidon, FEMAP, Abaqus, Solidworks compatible with Class Approval software.

  • Structural Drawings Approval. Knowledge and experience in: Structural Design and Repair project assessment for compliances with Class, National and International Rules and Regulations, Ship Specifications, technical writing and ability to produce clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures and reports.

  • Rules and Regulations. Knowledge and experience in: Classification Societies Rules and Regulations (LR, DNV-GL, IACS, Lifting Appliance, etc.), related to Structural aspects, IMO Regulations (Load Line, SOLAS, COLREGS, MARPOL, SPS Code and etc.) related to Structural aspects, International Standards (ISO, JIS and etc.) related to Ship design and build aspects.

  • Material and Welding. Knowledge and experience in: material science (steel) in shipbuilding industry (metrology, Grades and applications), material science (aluminium) in shipbuilding industry (metrology, Grades and applications), shipbuilding and repair quality welding standards for Hull Structures during construction or repair, NDT (Non Destructive Test) in welding details and structural components.

  • Autodesk Software. Knowledge and experience in: AutoCAD (2D & 3D) as a Computer-Aided Ship Structural Design tool, Navisworks as a tool to check and inspect 3D model of ShipConstructor, Navisworks, Cadmatic and Eshare as a tool to check, extract data and manipulate 3D model.

 
What you must have:

  • A Degree in Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering or equivalent

  • Minimum 5 years’ in a similar position (Naval Architect/ Mechanical Engineering as Project Engineer) with heavy involvement in Structures

  • Chartered/Professional Engineer Status shall be an asset; must be eligible to register as EIT.

  • Good working knowledge of the following programs or similar: AutoCAD, Femap, Multiframe, ShipConstructor, SolidWorks, Navisworks. Cadmatic and MS Office

  • Shipyard experience desired

  • Conversant in international Naval Architecture codes and standards such as IMO, SOLAS, IACS and Classification Society Rules.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Demonstrated effective communication across a variety of cultures.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and under supervision to develop solutions to complex technical problems.

  • Good knowledge of Material Strength and Vibration using First principal calcs and Finite Element Analysis

  • Technical cognizance in one or more engineering areas, Structural Engineering in Ship Building and Marine Environment.

  • Above average analytical skills to gather and analyse/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.

  • Technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear detailed written technical specifications, procedures and reports.

  • Awareness of financial accounting, purchasing and management systems including skills with MS Project.

  • Above average organizational skills including the ability to maintain organization in a change environment, multi-task and establish priorities.

  • Travel may be required from time to time.

  • Commit to a high standard of safety and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer’s safety policies and rules.

  • Above average interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.

  • Exercise sound judgements and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions and corporate philosophy.


Salary/Rate Range: $44.00-$55.00 per hour
