The Senior Accountant is a key member of the finance team responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting within a project-based construction environment. This role partners closely with finance leadership and operational teams to provide financial insights that support strategic decision-making, optimize project performance, and ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations.
What you will be doing:
- Manage general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and supporting schedules.
- Perform job-cost accounting, variance analysis, and project profitability tracking.
- Support revenue recognition processes in accordance with GAAP and ASC 606, including percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Collaborate with project managers and operations teams on cost forecasting and change-order accounting.
- Monitor work-in-progress (WIP), billing, and collections to support healthy cash flow.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and applicable regulations.
- Assist with external audits, tax filings, and ESOP-related accounting requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls, and maximize the effectiveness of accounting systems.
- Consistently supporting accurate and timely financial close cycles.
- Delivering reliable job-cost and project financial data that supports informed business decisions.
- Maintaining well-reconciled accounts with minimal audit adjustments.
- Contributing to effective cash flow management and forecasting.
- Identifying and implementing improvements to financial processes, reporting, and controls.
- Building strong partnerships with cross-functional teams.
What you must have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Experience in construction or project-based accounting environments.
- Strong understanding of job-cost accounting and revenue recognition methodologies.
- Proficiency with accounting systems (such as Vista, HCSS, or similar ERP platforms) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
- Valid driver’s license.
Nice to have:
- CPA or CMA certification.
- Experience working for an ESOP or employee-owned organization.
- Familiarity with construction industry regulations, including prevailing wage and transportation-related projects.
- Experience with ERP implementations, system optimization, or process improvement initiatives.
