Schedule - Alternating weeks

  • Week 1: Monday–Wednesday, 8:30 AM – 9:00 PM (24 hours)

  • Week 2: Wednesday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 9:00 PM (24 hours)

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care within the Health Services Unit (HSU) of a correctional healthcare setting. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care, responding to medical emergencies, managing daily nursing operations, and coordinating care for both general population and restricted housing patients. The RN utilizes strong clinical judgment, assessment skills, and organizational abilities to ensure timely, effective, and compassionate care while maintaining compliance with facility policies and professional nursing standards.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily nursing assessments and provide direct patient care within the Health Services Unit.

  • Evaluate, prioritize, and respond to Health Service Requests submitted by patients from housing units.

  • Perform patient triage to determine the urgency of medical concerns and initiate appropriate interventions.

  • Coordinate and manage the daily nursing schedule to ensure efficient patient flow and continuity of care.

  • Conduct sick call clinics, assess patient complaints, develop nursing care plans, and implement appropriate interventions.

  • Respond promptly and effectively to medical emergencies throughout the facility.

  • Provide nursing care for patients in both the general population and restricted housing units.

  • Manage provider-referred follow-up appointments and independently perform RN follow-up assessments and treatments as appropriate.

  • Deliver long-term care nursing services for patients admitted to HSU sick cells for illness management, post-operative recovery, or extended observation.

  • Monitor patient progress, document assessments and interventions accurately, and communicate changes in condition to providers and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, nursing standards, and facility protocols.

  • Educate patients regarding medical conditions, medications, treatment plans, and health maintenance.

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation within the electronic health record.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable correctional healthcare policies, nursing standards, infection control practices, and patient confidentiality requirements.

  • Perform additional nursing duties as assigned to support the operations of the Health Services Unit.

Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred if required by the facility.

  • Previous correctional, emergency, medical-surgical, long-term care, or acute care nursing experience is preferred.

  • Strong clinical assessment, triage, critical thinking, and emergency response skills.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management abilities.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care in a secure correctional environment.

Work Environment

This position is based in a correctional healthcare setting and involves providing nursing care to patients in the Health Services Unit, general population housing, restricted housing, and inpatient HSU sick cells. The RN must be comfortable responding to emergencies, managing multiple priorities, and delivering care in a secure environment while maintaining professionalism, safety, and adherence to all correctional facility policies.
