Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Correctional Facility

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct patient care and support services to incarcerated individuals within a secure correctional healthcare environment. Working under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (LPNs/LVNs), and healthcare providers, the CNA assists with activities of daily living, monitors patient conditions, maintains accurate documentation, and contributes to the delivery of safe, compassionate, and effective healthcare services.

Schedule

  • 40 hours per week

  • AM/PM rotation

  • Every other weekend required

  • Shift options:

    • 8-hour AM Shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM

    • 8-hour PM Shift: 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM

    • 12-hour Day Shift: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and feeding as needed.

  • Obtain and record vital signs, height, weight, and other clinical measurements.

  • Observe and report changes in patient condition, behavior, or physical status to nursing staff.

  • Assist with patient intake, transfers, and discharge procedures as directed.

  • Support nursing staff during medical assessments, treatments, and emergency situations.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic and/or paper medical records.

  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized healthcare environment.

  • Follow infection prevention and control protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

  • Adhere to all correctional facility security procedures, policies, and protocols.

  • Establish and maintain professional boundaries with incarcerated individuals.

  • Participate in required staff meetings, training sessions, and continuing education activities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by nursing leadership.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the state of practice.

  • Current CPR/BLS certification.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Ability to work effectively in a correctional healthcare environment.

Preferred

  • Previous correctional healthcare, behavioral health, long-term care, hospital, or skilled nursing experience.

  • Experience working with diverse and underserved populations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic nursing care principles and patient safety practices.

  • Ability to accurately document patient information.

  • Strong observational and assessment support skills.

  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or emergency situations.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Understanding of security awareness and professional boundaries within a correctional setting.

Work Environment

This position is located within a correctional facility and requires daily interaction with incarcerated individuals. Staff must comply with all institutional safety, security, and healthcare regulations while providing professional and respectful patient care.
