Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Correctional Facility
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct patient care and support services to incarcerated individuals within a secure correctional healthcare environment. Working under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (LPNs/LVNs), and healthcare providers, the CNA assists with activities of daily living, monitors patient conditions, maintains accurate documentation, and contributes to the delivery of safe, compassionate, and effective healthcare services.

8-hour AM Shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM

8-hour PM Shift: 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM

12-hour Day Shift: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
-
Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and feeding as needed.

Obtain and record vital signs, height, weight, and other clinical measurements.

Observe and report changes in patient condition, behavior, or physical status to nursing staff.

Assist with patient intake, transfers, and discharge procedures as directed.

Support nursing staff during medical assessments, treatments, and emergency situations.

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic and/or paper medical records.

Ensure a clean, safe, and organized healthcare environment.

Follow infection prevention and control protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

Adhere to all correctional facility security procedures, policies, and protocols.

Establish and maintain professional boundaries with incarcerated individuals.

Participate in required staff meetings, training sessions, and continuing education activities.

Perform other duties as assigned by nursing leadership.
Qualifications
Required
-
Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the state of practice.

Current CPR/BLS certification.
-
High school diploma or equivalent.
-
Ability to work effectively in a correctional healthcare environment.
Preferred
-
Previous correctional healthcare, behavioral health, long-term care, hospital, or skilled nursing experience.

Experience working with diverse and underserved populations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of basic nursing care principles and patient safety practices.

Ability to accurately document patient information.

Strong observational and assessment support skills.

Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or emergency situations.

Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Understanding of security awareness and professional boundaries within a correctional setting.
Work Environment
This position is located within a correctional facility and requires daily interaction with incarcerated individuals. Staff must comply with all institutional safety, security, and healthcare regulations while providing professional and respectful patient care.
